The Star Tribune has held Cam up as an example of clean politics in an article entitled "Council's Gordon sticks to his standards on contributions." The article details how Cam has stayed true to the campaign finance commitments he made during the 2005 race: not to take any money from Political Action Committees or people with business before the City. Cam has even gone so far as to return a contribution from a bar owner who benefitted from an ordinance change Cam sponsored, and has instituted a system with his campaign treasurer to catch any similar issues quickly.
Cam has advocated campaign finance reform at the local level for years. He's working to get the Legislature to give the City the authority to require more financial reporting, and would support a restriction on all elected officials accepting campaign funds from people with business before the City.
